Since 2005, the French sneaker brand Veja has been offering shoes for women, men and children made from fair production and environmentally friendly materials. According to the company's philosophy, the concept of sustainability is their top priority, whether it is the purchase of organic cotton or the purchase and processing of leather and rubber.
Veja - A Brand With A Vision
Sébastien Kopp and his co-founder Ghislain Morillion got to know each other at school. Afterwards, the Veja men both studied business and later even worked for the same company. But the two men were not happy to be bankers for long, so they started to check programs of big companies for sustainability, fair trade and social responsibility. The sobering result showed the Veja founders that it was time to start their own sustainable and ethical project.
The idea for the ecological sneakers was born. In the first test project, the individual production steps were checked for sustainable and social standards. Kopp and Morillion were able to draw on their experience from previous jobs and identified Brazil as the perfect production location.
The Sneakers Today
Today, the Veja Sneakers production is still located in the Acre region of Brazil. Because the location has many advantages for Veja shoes. Raw materials such as natural rubber, organic cotton and leather can be obtained directly from the region. And also the final production, where high social standards and work safety are maintained, takes place there.
The sneaker label Veja, which means "to see" in Portuguese, has been able to assert itself on the market from the very beginning with high-quality sneakers in cool designs. One of the reasons for this is that the sneakers are available at a fair price. Since Veja does not use classic advertising measures, the company can offer a moderate price despite the high production costs. From the first Veja V10 sneaker to the Veja SDU and Esplar shoes to the Veja V12, Veja has already sold more than 2.3 million pairs of shoes and has been able to improve the eco-balance of every user a little bit by this.
From Brazil to the GREENALITY Store
In the Brazilian jungle of Feijó, on the border to Peru, the wild rubber of the Amazon is harvested for the soles of Veja shoes. This comes from the rubber trees, which are not all lined up in rows like for example on many Asian plantations, but where and how nature allows it.
For a while, however, things did not look too good for the rubber tappers from Acre, as the demand for the natural material declined and competition from Asia increased. However, the sneaker brand Veja brought new hope to the region and since the start of production in 2004, the inhabitants can rely on a fair income.
The freshly tapped rubber is transformed into solid raw rubber, which is rolled into rubber sheets. These are then processed into Veja soles in the shoe factory.
The raw materials for the upper and inner material, which, depending on the sneaker model, is made of organic cotton, vegetable-tanned leather, vegan nubuck or recycled polyester, also come from Brazil. By that, Veja saves long transport routes and CO2 emissions. Visit Veja´s project for more information about the origin of the organic cotton, leather and Veja´s certificates.
In the shoe factory, which is run by a women's cooperative, our favourite models, such as the Veja V10, or Veja Esplar sneakers, are made. You can find the perfect pair of Veja sneakers in the classical tennis shoe white or in brighter colours and patterns in our stores in Stuttgart and Hannover or simply here in the GREENALITY online shop.
