8,000 litres of water for just one pair of jeans?
Jeans match with everything, are available in many designs and colours and simply look good! Cleanly processed jeans can actually be worn for several years without any problems, but due to the disposable mentality and the constant emergence of new trends, they are often produced cheaply and then thrown away after a short time. Many people are probably not aware that up to 8,000 litres of water are used to produce just one pair of jeans.
The Dutch jeans concept is based on recycling and upcycling
Bert van Son, the CEO and founder of Mud Jeans, has 30 years of experience in the textile industry and learned how enormously the production of fast fashion affects the environment and human health, which is why he has been developing innovative alternatives since 2013. For example, to minimize water consumption, Mud Jeans uses recycled cotton, thereby saving 40 percent of water consumption. New mud jeans are produced by shredding old, worn jeans into fibers, blending them with new organic cotton and processing them into recycled yarn. The organic cotton is always GOTS and BCI certified, which means that the production process from the extraction of raw materials to the final product is environmentally friendly, sustainable and complies with social labour standards. Due to the proportion of recycled cotton, however, the jeans may no longer be labelled with these certificates. Good to know: You can send your pants back to Mud Jeans when they are broken or when you no longer wear them. They will then be recycled or sold as a new vintage model.
Even people and animals don't have to suffer for these jeans
The jeans are produced in Tunisia. Mud Jeans is also a member of the Fair Wear Foundation and the Dutch Circle Economy Foundation and has been awarded the Fairtrade certificate. This ensures that the raw materials are always remunerated fair, human rights are respected and the farmers are trained in organic farming. Unlike many conventional jeans, mud jeans have rather simple washes (with ozone gas and laser) to avoid harmful chemical processes. For outerwear, stone buttons or cotton buttons are used as an alternative to mother-of-pearl or horn buttons. Instead of leather patches, mud jeans have printed patches, making jeans completely vegan and PeTA Approved Vegan certified.
