As a little reminder for all of those who did not always pay attention at school: Hydrophilic is made up of the Greek words for water and friend. So when a brand takes on this name, it can be assumed that the founders Sebastian Bensmann and Christoph Laudon are water-affin. The Hydrophil project started in 2012 with a blog founded by Sebastian about water in all its forms and related ecological issues. The Hydrophil label focuses on sustainably produced bathroom accessories. At the same time, Hydrophil produces in a water-neutral way, which means that the resource is used as sparingly as possible and is hardly polluted overall. In the production process, Hydrophil strives to minimise water consumption and does not use chemical substances or mineral oil. In this way, the groundwater remains clean, which is reflected in a higher quality of drinking water. With the aim of expanding access to fresh water and sanitary facilities internationally, the brand donates ten percent of the proceeds from sales to the initiative Viva con Agua, which has set itself the task of implementing this global project. The label itself promotes the use of tap water as drinking water and offers a glass bottle with swing top, since the bottling and transport of mineral water alone releases CO2 and companies use plastic bottles for the most part.
The hydrophilic bamboo toothbrush
Especially well known among environmentally conscious consumers is the toothbrush from Hydrophil. Available in various levels of hardness and also for children, the sustainably produced toothbrush is in no way inferior to conventional models. The handle is made of the rapidly renewable raw material bamboo and the bristles are made of BPA-free nylon. Why a toothbrush made of bamboo? Quite simply, the high volume of plastic waste is endangering the natural balance of the oceans in which plastic floats in abundance. In addition, the production process requires oil, a natural resource that will soon run out at current levels of consumption, and its localised nature is fuelling conflict and social inequality. After using the brush, the head with the synthetic fibre nylon can be broken off and recycled if disposed of properly. Hydrophil also offers cotton swabs made of bamboo and cotton as well as a bamboo cup. The packaging is biodegradable and all products are fair traded and vegan.
Sustainable innovative hygiene products
For your convenience, Hydrophilic offers holders to store your toothbrush, as well as vegan, fluoride-free toothpaste with natural flavors. Biodegradable soap, suitable for sensitive skin, made from oils, and a lip balm, also made from a few natural ingredients, ensure that the feel-good aspect in the bathroom is not neglected. A great upcycling idea is the toilet bag made of used sailcloth, truck tarpaulins and wetsuits: also suitable for permanent hanging storage and practically rolled up for travel - a real all-rounder. Those who love water, like Sebastian and Christoph, can also wear their printed shirts made of organic cotton and carry the message of hydrophil to the whole world: Love Water.
